Another thing to add are consistent updates. You can't update a minor version and have the management console say you're at an older version. ALL version locations need to display the correct hotfix update. You can say in the console youre at "10.1.0.2345" and in the registry say, "10.1.0.2478". Security is going to freak out if you're ever audited.

"I manually did this via powershell and ansible. They have a predicable directory structure, so you can automate the entire hotfix without needing to actually touch the box."

I want to extend this by saying, unfortunately, I can't provide my scripts. I have already heavily advised BeyondTrust on this too. They wanted my scripts, but our customer won't allow us to trade assets. I can advise you if you want to reach out: christopher.j.herzog@lmco.com

Hotfix Rollups are delivered as PowerShell scripts. They pause in the middle of the script when SQL scripts must be run. These scripts have to be transferred to a DBA with instruction on how to run them. During this time the script sits at a 'press continue after SQL is run' prompt. UVM have short inactive timeouts and often the session terminates before the SQL can be run. The prompt is very sensitive to screen activity and a misplaces mouse click or key press can continue the script unintentionally. In contrast base update packages are delivered as an executable. This is simply run and completes to end without intervention. No additional coordination with a DBA is required and there is significantly less opportunity for human error.
