Allow Managed Assets to be Deleted or Unmanaged by a Smart Rule

We are running into a major issue because we are not able to purge out assets managed by Password Safe. We bought Password Safe to manage local accounts on client endpoints. The product does not do a good job at this because you can't purge out the assets. We had over 45,000 assets clogging up our DB we cannot delete or unmanage. We need a smart rule action to allow us to do so. As these are client endpoints they are constantly coming in and dying off and the product needs to manage that correctly.

    No, no asset or related data remain in Password Safe after the asset/managed system is purged. Of course, if you've forwarded events to a SIEM, for example, then that data will remain but there will be no data in Password Safe to correlate the data against.

    My concern would be if the asset was deleted and you needed forensic information, would it be available going forward after the deletion?

    Using the API for the makes no sense for client endpoints. We cannot do this in our environment we have 110,000 client endpoints with thousands turning over daily. I don't understand why this cannot be done with a smart rule. This is a critical function that can't be dependent on an external API script running. We had critical DB issues in October due to managed assets not purging out in a timely manner and need this in the product. I suggest you speak with Wayne Martin and Justin Sedge in support. We cannot use the product long term in this condition. Today we have a custom SQL procedure doing this but it needs to be part of the product so we don't need to rebuild this every time we upgrade.

    The API allows for endpoints to be unmanaged from Password Safe which would return them to the purge-able collection of Assets (purge happens if an asset has no been 'heard from' within the defined timeframe (90-days by default)). As unmanaging an asset is something likely done as part of an off-boarding process, it's ideal for API integration where such activies may be batched to update across many systems.

    There are complexities around Smart Rules being used for this kind of activity in that a Smart Rule that has an affirmative action actually updates the relevant database entries, it's not a modifier on top of the retrieved information that would simply not apply when the Smart Rule no longer matched. We continue to review the Smart Rules mechanism but for the time being the API is the recommend route for this kind of activity.

    having this ability to delete managed assets would make the upkeep of the db and just in general a healthier db to work in.
